The Meaning of Love and Loss in Their Eyes Were Watching...
Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel about a woman and the trials and tribulations that she goes through while trying to find the true meaning of love and loss. In the novel Janie struggles to find someone that honestly loves her and she has to deal with the lost she felt when the she realized that the love that she received is forever lost. Some major themes in the novel would be work, sexuality, freedom and love. All of these themes are important in understanding the novel. There are numerous patterns in Their Eyes Were Watching God that connects to other works in its genre. While analyzing the novel you are able to tell by the structure of the novel that the novel belongs in the genre of a romantic drama because there are a numerous amounts of exciting, surprising and unexpected events and the story focuses on the love that TeaCake and Janie has in the novel. The story has numerous amounts of unexpected events that was in the novel. One unexpected event would be when Janie had to kill TeaCake before TeaCake killed her. The Sign of the Southern Cross Of Mountains and Moonshine free essay sample
For being as far north as possible to still be considered Southern, The Sign of the Southern Cross is one of the most Southern bands youll ever hear, and theyre damn proud of it. Their debut album, ââ¬Å"Of Mountains and Moonshine,â⬠is littered with Southern influence. You can hear it in the lyrics, riffs, grooves, vocals: just about everything. They draw influence from multiple genres including groove metal, sludge, blues, and ââ¬â dare I say ââ¬â perhaps even country. They blend them all together extremely well, but they may rely a bit too much on their influences for their own good. ââ¬Å"Of Mountains and Moonshineâ⬠isnt the most original album ever, or a groundbreaking masterpiece. Rather, it is simply a fantastic slab of groove metal. And riffs ââ¬â dont forget the riffs. This album has tons of em, and while they might sound similar at times, youll find yourself headbanging and air-guitaring anyway. Covering à topics including Huckleberry Finn, fathers who leave, and pig slaughtering, theyre well written, albeit ridiculous at times. They might be a tad over the top, but Ill be damned if theyre not awesome. Ive used the word ââ¬Å"Southernâ⬠a few times to describe this album; another appropriate word would be ââ¬Å"energy.â⬠Songs lik e ââ¬Å"Unwelcome in That Houseâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Hog Callinâ⬠have energy that you cant find in the most brutal death metal tracks. You cant sit still and listen to this; youll be moving in one way or another by the time its 68 minutes are through. Its a hell of a ride. Not only is this the ultimate backyard barbecue album, its just an amazing record that deserves your time. If you like that swampy heaviness that bands like Down bring to the table but want some fast-paced, punch-in-the-face metal, this is for you. On the stormy morning of Sunday, February 12, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, wife of Thomas, gave birth to a boy. He was born on a bed of poles covered with corn husks. The baby was named Abraham after his grandfather. In 1811 the Lincolns moved to a farm on Knob Creek which was also near Hodgenville. In 1811 or 1812, Abraham's younger brother, Thomas, died in infancy. Abraham spent a short amount of time in a log schoolhouse. He began to learn his ABC's from a teacher named Zachariah Riney. He attended school with his sister, Sarah. Late in 1816 the Lincoln family moved to southern Indiana and settled near present day Gentryville. A cabin was constructed near Little Pigeon Creek. It measured 16 X 18 feet, and it had one window. Abraham's mother, Nancy, passed away on October 5th, 1818, she died of milk sickness. In 1819, Abraham would barrow books from his neighbors to read. In 1821 Abraham attended school taught by James Swaney for about 4 months. Also in 1824 Abraham attended school taught by Azel Dorsey. In 1827 Abraham's sister, Sarah died giving birth to her son. In 1831, Lincoln decided to leave his family and go off on his own. In July he moved to New Salem, Illinois, where he boarded at Rutledge's tavern and became acquainted with the owner's daughter, Ann. New Salem was a frontier village consisting of one long street on a bluff over the Sangamon River. On August 6th, 1832 Lincoln was defeated while running for the Illinois State Legislature. Lincoln began to operate a general store in New Salem along with William F. Berry. Again, In 1834, Lincoln ran for the Illinois State Legislature, but this time he was elected. During the summer, John T. Stuart advised Lincoln to study law. On December 1 he took his seat in state government in Vandalia. In 1837 Lincoln, 28, was admitted to the Illinois Bar on March 1, and he moved to Springfield on April 15. He became a law partner of John Stuart and lived with Joshua Speed. Lincoln now had income from a law practice as well as a state legislator. November 4,1842 Lincoln married Mary Todd. The first son of the Lincolns, Robert Todd, was born August 1, 1843 at the Globe Tavern. In 1844 Abraham and Mary purchased a home from Dr. Dresser in Springfield for $1500. It was located at the corner of Eighth and Jackson. The family moved in on May 2nd. In 1849 Lincoln failed in his attempt to be appointed commissioner of the General Land Office, and he returned to a full time law practice in Springfield as his term in the House of Representatives had expired on March 4th. On March 7th he was admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court. In 1850 Lincoln's son, "Eddie," died on February 1. His third son, William Wallace was born on December 21st. The fourth and last son of the Lincolns, Thomas, was born on April 4th, 1853. In 1858 Lincoln was nominated by the Republicans to run for the U.S. Senate against Stephen Douglas. He gave his famous "House Divided" speech. The Old State Capitol in Springfield where Lincoln gave the House Divided speech. During the summer, Lincoln and Douglas engaged in a series of 7 debates throughout Illinois. On November 2nd Douglas won the election. On May 18th, 1860 Lincoln was nominated for President at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. On November 6th Lincoln was elected President over 3 opponents (Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell) winning 39% of the popular vote but nearly 60% of the electoral vote. On January 1st, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves in the rebelling areas, took effect. On March 3rd Lincoln approved the first draft law in U.S. history. In early July the Union won two major battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. In 1864 Lincoln nominated Ulysses S. Grant as the first full lieutenant general since George Washington. Grant assumed his role as General-in-Chief of Union armies. Lincoln received the Republican nomination on June 8th to run for a 2nd term as President. Andrew Johnson was his Vice-presidential running mate. On November 8th he easily defeated Democrat George B. McClellan

A Review of Oxidative Stress essays A Review of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidants Oxidants such as super oxide, a free radical form of oxygen gas, hydrogen peroxide, and free radical hydroxide are molecules that can commence chain reactions in a cell and cause damage along the way. A free radical is any molecule with an unpaired electron that has only one electron left in a binding site. These radicals are formed by homolysis of a covalent bond (Solomon 431). When an oxidant is unchecked in a cell it can alter many different types of molecules such as DNA and other nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. These molecules are changed so that they contain the free radical and are permanently damaged. These damages can lead to many different types of complications in the body, all culminating in aging. Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimers Disease, and even cataracts can be caused by oxidation due to do free radicals. Antioxidants, by their name, have the ability to neutralize the damaging oxidants that are in the body. There are many antioxidants, some of which are well known like Vitamin C and E, and other that are not like polyphenols. There is significant research being done with antioxidants, testing their ability to reduce the symptoms of aging. Although all of the oxidants that occur in the cell cannot be traced back to a source, most come from four different natural mechanisms. The first is due to common cellular respiration. When oxygen gas is consumed it is reduced to form water. About 2% of this process goes awry and one of the three previously mentioned oxidants are formed as partially reduced oxygen leaks out of the reaction. The second type of oxidant formation is also a natural use. When the immune systems phagocytic cells attack a bodily disturbance, they destroy these diseased cells by an oxidative burst of nitric oxide. Many problems currently plague the Central American nation of Mexico. Among the most sever of these problems is drug trafficking and production. These problems have been around for hundreds of years but not at such a severe level that is seen now. Many different things work to together to make these problems extremely sever. The misconception throughout the world is that these are to root of the causes. Despite popular sentiment these problems are not caused by individuals in Mexico rather, they are instead caused by external sources acting on and many times taking advantage of Mexico. The main cause for the current drug problems in Mexico is the way the government is and was structured and the external influences on Mexico. Throughout history many counties have ââ¬Å"put their handâ⬠in the politics and government of Mexico. The United States and many other European nations have repeatedly set up ââ¬Å"puppet governmentsâ⬠to make it seem like they were giving the people a say when in fact they controlled the government. These so called democracies often existed just so that a foreign government could protect its own interests and business. When it came time for great amounts of political change these puppet governments easily fell and dictatorships and unstable government resulted. Throughout the history of Mexico the United States has intervened into both political and economic actions. When Mexico had finally established a stable government they defaulted on many international loans and owed money to France. France therefore had established an inva sion force and was waiting in the Gulf of Mexico, when word of this reached Washington the US sent thousands of troops again into Mexico. This action destabilized an already faltering governm... ...Many solutions can be offered to solve these problems the most important is an international response. The United States and the world must agree to recognize the current problems as potentially dangerous to global stability and to US stability. Mexico cannot provide the economic or military power needed to disperse these problems. A plan must be drawn up among world leaders to provide aid to the Mexican Government. Another solution can be a global crackdown on drug use; we must first destroy the demand around the world for these illegal substances and then address the weakness of the Mexican government to handle these problems in the future. These among other solution will help to stabilize Mexico. I think that the global community should realize that we all played a role however small in creating these problems and now we should all play a role in solving them.

During the slave trade African American families were routinely split up for profit.Can you imagine the effect that this had on the people, to have their families torn apart? African Americans had to do whatever they were told to do by their so called ââ¬Å"mastersâ⬠and if they did not as history tells us, they were whipped, beaten, and even hanged. It was said that ââ¬Å"African Americans were not really people. â⬠(Social Problems, Ch. 3, p. 65). This is how a society that was supposed to be civilized viewed other human beings. Later, after slavery ended, African Americans continued to face prejudice and discrimination in their everyday lives.African Americans were being denied their basic civil rights and institutional discrimination was the norm. African Americans were not allowed to go to school with whites, drink from the same water fountains, stay at the same hotels, eat at the same restaurants, vote, and had to give up their seat to white pe ople on the bus. Proof of this can be seen in a ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States. ââ¬Å"In the 1857 Dred Scott case, the U. S. Supreme Court stated that slaves were not citizens entitled to the rights and protections of U. S. law. â⬠This was backed up by segregation and Jim Crow laws. Social Problems, Ch. 3, p. 65). Some of the political, social, and cultural issues and concerns throughout American history for African Americans were gaining our freedom, civil rights, and equality for our people. Our people had been through so much and the fight to gain these things would take years, even today, the issue of equality seems to still not be settled as reflected in the wages paid to African Americans. The median pay of White men is $52,273, for woman it is $40,219. The median pay of Black men is $40,219, for woman it is $32,829.In addition, it is said that the level of education has nothing to do with the gap, because even at the ââ¬Å"highest levelsâ⬠it is still present. (Racial and Ethnic Groups, Ch. 3, p. 67). Why are we paid so much less for performing the same jobs? I think that discrimination has to be playing a role here, would you agree? John, as I mentioned earlier; slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws were enacted against African Americans. These laws were established to deny us of our civil rights and allowed for legal discrimination against African Americans.Organizations or groups that fought against these laws were, ââ¬Å"National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). â⬠They fought these laws by having protests, demonstrations, political organizing, and voter registration drives in the Civil Rights Movement (1950s and 1960s). Report Writing: Style and Structure Summary Writing a report can seem daunting at first, but with a solid understanding of the fundamental structure and style used in constructing clear and concise reports, it can be achieved. The standard report format is as follows: Title, Summary, Introduction, Body, Conclusions, Recommendations, Appendix, References and Table of Contents. We will first look at how to prepare a report before the writing begins. Learning objectives At the end of the session, students will be able to: â⬠¢ Write with a specific purpose and audience in mind â⬠¢ Structure sentences, paragraphs and reports Write clearly and concisely Purpose and audience Before writing a report you should first identify some key factors, which will help you plan your approach and write with clarity. The first question you should ask yourself is, ââ¬Å"what is the purpose of the report? â⬠Purpose ââ¬Å"What is it about, and what is it for? â⬠It is beneficial to esta blish the purpose of your report before you start writing, so that you can think clearly on the subject, and produce a report styled to fit the needs of your purpose. Recognize what your report is for, (informing, instructing, guiding) and focus your writing on explaining the details.If for example, you want to write an instructional report for a team of colleagues, you know that you must focus your writing on providing clear concise instructions, which will allow your reader to comprehend the processes that you are describing. Audience ââ¬Å"Who are you writing for? â⬠The second question you should ask yourself is, ââ¬Å"who is going to read this report and why? â⬠Knowing your audience will help you determine how long your report should be, how it should be presented, and what level of terminology you should use to best attract and maintain the interest of your reader.If for example, you are writing a report to inform policy makers, you would want to focus on presenti ng your evidence clearly and concisely. We will now try an exercise on identifying audience and purpose: Exercise one Malaria Prevention You are a Health worker at the Ministry Of Health and have been asked to write a report on Malaria. You have access to the figures on Malaria incidents in the Country over the last five years, as well as access to the latest info on drugs and other barriers to prevent Malaria. 1. Describe the purpose of your report, and identify your audience.The sentence Now that we know how to identify our audience and define a purpose, we will look at how to write clearly and succinctly. Understanding how to structure a sentence is essential to conveying meaning clearly. Following are a few rules of thumb to help avoid ambiguous sentences: â⬠¢ Keep it short and to the point. Many people have trouble with run-on sentences, creating ambiguity by attaching many ideas together with large combinations of commas, semicolons and dashes. Complete one thought and clo se out your sentence with end punctuation. â⬠¢ Words for words sake.Avoid extraneous words, and parentheses that do not add to your point. â⬠¢ Donââ¬â¢t leave it hanging. Most sentence fragments are phrases that belong to the previous thought. To correct the problem in this instance, we simply remove the period. Correct ââ¬Å"Mark has finished his work on time since he started planning ahead. â⬠Run-on sentence ââ¬Å"Jane loves Tom he is a good friend. â⬠A run-on sentence occurs when you have two complete sentences that are not separated by correct punctuation.In this case we can correct it with a comma and a linking word, or by using a period. Correct ââ¬Å"Jane loves Tom, because he is a good friend. â⬠ââ¬Å"Jane loves Tom. He is a good friend. â⬠Exercise 2 Correct the following sentence fragments and run-on sentences. Your topic sentence should explain what the body of the paragraph will cover, (just like your introduction explains what to expect in the report). It is a good idea to ââ¬Å"mapâ⬠out your report, by first writing topic sentences for each of the different paragraphs or sections of your report. 2. Body Support sentences Support sentences are the body of paragraphs . This is the section of your report that serves to provide evidence and examples that reinforce your thesis statement. Support sentences are also used to clearly explain and underpin main ideas. . Conclusion Concluding sentences The concluding sentence is used to reiterate the main points developed by the support sentences, and signal the end of a paragraph. They are also useful for adding emphasis to certain key points, through repetition. We will now look at how to create the different parts of a report outside of the general writing, which are: Title, Summary, Recommendations, Appendix, References, and Table of Contents. Title The title is your first contact with the reader, and should inform them succinctly about what they are about to read. SummaryThe purpose of a summary is to provide an overview of the report. It is not necessary to give detailed information in the summary, but rather to provide an indication of the type of information that the report contains. Average summa ries are between 100-150 words, and are generally written after the report has been completed, so that you know exactly what you are summarizing. Recommendations Recommendations are not an essential part of a report; however, if you are including one, it should follow from your conclusion. A brief statement clearly declaring your recommendations will suffice.Appendix An appendix contains materials that are peripheral, but relevant to your report. For example you may wish to include a glossary of terms in your appendix if you are writing a technical report for those who are not experts on the subject. You may also include copies of research tools such as questionnaires and manuals, as well as tables and diagrams that you feel would disrupt the flow of your report by breaking it up. If your appendix does contain tables, diagrams etc. , make sure to label them properly, so that the can easily be found when referenced.References If you have consulted or quoted any media sources, (print or otherwise) to help you compile your report, they must be acknowledged here, as well as in the text. Citing your resources not only avoids running into plagiarism issues, but strengthens your work by backing up your report with evidence from the work of others. My admiration goes to all who delivered a message of a cause through literature, music, and actions such as demonstrations and protests. The widely spread utterance revolution is, most of the time, received with massive misconception. A revolution does not necessarily signify violence. It is not a producible article nor is it an action. It is an aspect that takes place. This implies that a person cannot make a revolution, but one can lead to or provoke a revolution. Individuals, nations, or groups that commence a path that leads to a rebellion are usually ones who have tasted the bitterness of oppression or the acidity of existing as the minority. A revolution is a change. A change does not have to be to a positive state. Therefore, a revolution could lead to an inferior negative situation. In this case the one behind that particular negative revolution probably looks at the aspect through another window from which he sees the inferior cause as a superior one. The question mostly inquired is: does the revolution introduce and stimulate the individual or does the individual introduce the revolution? I find this specific question to be coming from a source of skepticism and of underestimation to the potency of individuality. As we all know, people can be divided under 2 categories: activists and pessimists. Activism is simply defined by people who stand up for what is right, regardless to there quantity in society or other objectives that may be as obstacles. In Dracula (1931), Count Dracula, something of a real estate tycoon and upwardly rich aristocrat, preys on the people he comes across in Transylvania.à Dracula is different than the average monster because of his strikingly literal human nature.à He also has the enhanced ability to seduce his victims beyond their control, which makes him exceptionally difficult to properly vanquish.à The story also ends heroically as Van Helsing is proven right and is able to destroy Dracula.à Draculaââ¬â¢s main motive, besides amusement, is simply, to feed. King Kong (1933) differs from many monster movies because the character relationships are vitally important for the movie to progress.à There are two main relationships developed throughout, that of Ann and Jack and that of Ann and King Kong.à King Kongââ¬â¢s motive, once he falls for his new companion Ann, is to protect her from the evils in his jungle environment, and later, the evils he sees New York City.à à à One of the final lines in the movies, ââ¬Å"it wasnââ¬â¢t the airplanes, it was beauty that killed the beastâ⬠strikes a cord in any heart and makes King Kong perhaps the most lovable of all movie monsters because of his human desire to protect Ann. In The Mummy (1932) a priest is resurrected accidentally by an unwitting team of archeologists and sets about seeking his lost love.à Bad things happen along the way, one of the archeologists is taken as a replacement for the mummyââ¬â¢s lost bride, but the mummy is vanquished in the end when the archeologists destroy the scroll that brought him back to life.à The mummy, Im-ho-tep, basically sends his wrath out on the world and spends the movie causing mass destruction because his slumber was disturbed.à Simple as that. To be honest, the end result of the town and its people doesnââ¬â¢t really matter, and any ending is entirely plausible.à But, the intrigue that makes a good monster movie is to be competently presented with the monster, the origin of the monster, and for the audience to discover what that monster wants out of the society they are terrorizing.à While the monster makes the lives of the characters in the story miserable, the audience is torn between wanting the characters to win, or actually feeling sympathy for the monster because of the conditions presented surrounding that monsterââ¬â¢s origin. Moreover, monster movie plots have been known to fit into the plot categories and monster types to such a degree that a generator was actually created by David Neilsen.à Among the other completely hilarious and surprisingly useful generators to be had, the Monster Movie Pitch allows a user to create their own monster movie pitch by filling in the required fields.à Once filled in, the monster movie pitch is instantly created and a visitor can do what they want with the results. Because this generator actually serves to illuminate the points within this paper, a short detour will be taken.à With that said, the generator dictates that a male lead, female lead, and male sidekick are required, as well as a title.à Then the setting must be chosen: either a dark and forbidding forest, a sleepy little town, a mental institution, at sea, or ancient ruins.à Then the monster type must be selected: either the undead, extra-terrestrial, scientific abomination, creature of folklore/myth/legend, or nature gone bad.à And finally, the monster motive must be defined: revenge, to feed, to protect its young, its slumber has been disturbed, or it seeks to destroy humanity. This long awaited sequel to his international hit, Gong of Deviled Oxen, reunites aggressive shepherd Huche Ramman (Zack) with his holy guide Hammotep (Trent) in their biggest adventure yet. This time, Huche discovers messages in the entrails of his sheep and the trail leads to an extra-terrestrial temptress (Emily) who wishes to use sin to destroy all of humanity.
